Low Price Acer Aspire One AOA150-1126 8.9-Inch Netbook - White

My wife and I have gotten tired of our 17" laptop... It was just a bit too heavy for doing "quick" online tasks. The AspireOne would have been the perfect little netbook to solve that problem...

Originally, I would have given the product 4 stars. On the positive side, the product is a tight little package that is lightweight, sturdy, and easy to use. The display is pretty decent (though a bit vertically challenged at 1024x600) and the keyboard is pretty good if you can adjust to its size.

However, there were a number of problems with it that I really can't recommend the product. That is why I am giving it 2 stars.

The most serious problem is that the wireless networking is very flaky out-of-the-box. More often than not, the computer would find ("associate") the wireless router, but would not actually establish a reliable data connection, despite receiving good or excellent signal levels. Sometimes, it would be so bad that the OS wouldn't even get the IP address setting via DHCP. When the IP settings do get established, the connection was flaky and slow.

If you google around, you will find many references to problems with the Wifi on this product. It turns out that you can download updated drivers and change the settings in an attempt to improve the performance (at the expense of battery life).

The next problem is not necessarily the computer's fault -- but somehow, GMail runs extremely slowly when running under IE7 that comes with the system. I don't have this problem with the 5 other computers that I regularly use (at home and at work), or with other computers I have used elsewhere (friends, hotel, etc.). Several hours of trying to solve this problem have gotten me nowhere. Ultimately, I had to install Firefox to be able to use GMail. Since one of the reasons I got this laptop was to check e-mail, this was another minus.

Finally, the touchpad on this netbook is also not very good. The left and right buttons are awkwardly placed, and have the wrong feel to them, making them somewhat unpleasant to use. The "tap" method to generate mouse clicks through the pad was flaky -- about 15% of the time, it would not register the tap. I was able to improve this a bit by going to the touchpad setting (pointing device properties->device settings->settings->sensitivity) and set the touchpad to respond to the lightest touch. Also, the virtual scroll wheel functionality does not work very well, and is almost useless under IE7 while reading a long web page.

With the above annoyances, we have decided to return this otherwise lovely product.
