Purchase Acer Aspire One AOA150-1126 8.9-Inch Netbook - White

I bought the Acer Aspire One as a replacement for my large, heavy Compaq F700. The F700 lasted less than a year before the AMD processor burned out and I nearly lost all of my data.

I was a little nervous about buying the One for a few reasons. I use my laptops A LOT. I am on them constantly for work. I needed a workhorse and was not sure the One was the laptop/netbook I was looking for. Also, I was nervous about downsizing. I was used to a 15 inch screen and was afraid that a smaller computer would not be adequate for the work I was doing (I'm in PR/marketing and am constantly writing copy). Lastly, although the One gets great reviews on this site, I wasn't 100% certain it would make a good primary laptop. And the keyboard thing...well...keep reading.

Boy, was I wrong! Let me speak plainly: I am in love with this little computer. It starts up quickly, has incredible battery capacity (most of the time I don't keep it plugged in. I get nearly 6 hours on it, easy), and it connected to my wireless in a flash. Going back to XP was the best thing that ever happened to me. I found Vista to be at the very least annoying and buggy. I have had no problems whatsoever with the vastly superior XP.

This computer fits in great with the person who moves around a lot and works in unusual places. I hate desktops and feel like a hostage when I use them. With the Acer, I can work from bed, the couch, the floor, on an airplane, etc. It's so light and small that it took a long time to even wrap my brain around the size. I still marvel at how compact and light it is.

I had to go into the office other day and unfortunately had to take my old Compaq to move files over, as well as the One, and I realized that compared to the One, I hate the Compaq and its awkward size and weight I never, ever want to go back to a larger laptop again.

On the keyboard...I had issues with it for the first day or so -- not because the keys are small...they are big. The main issue was that they are so close together. On the second day, however, I woke up and started using it and -ping- I was totally used to the spacing and have no problem typing out an entire white paper or anything else. I don't have the smallest fingers and trust me when I say you WILL get used to this keyboard and you will love it.

The only issue I had with the Acer is that it had a little trouble waking up from standby mode at first. I went onto some message boards and they recommended upgrading the drivers for the Webcam. I went to the Acer site, found a set of more recent drivers and did that, and now the computer wakes up from standby with no problem at all.

Now that I've had this thing, I will repeat myself: I will never go back to a larger laptop again. I've gotten quite used to the display of the One. I kicked up the text size on the pages I'm looking at and everything is grand. As far as images go, yes, sometimes I don't get that breathtaking feeling when I see an image load up huge, but that's not an issue for me. If I really, really wanted to feel that way, I'd just use the husband's desktop or hook this sucker up to a larger monitor.

One more thing: if you are worried about the casing showing every little smudge or fingerprint, go with the white. I chose the white version for that reason and it's far easier to hide these things than say, the pink or blue versions.

I like this computer so much that the husband wants to get one too. He is insanely jealous. He has a huge laptop that seems to weigh a ton, but he sees me on this mini and is constantly looking to justify the expense of getting one for himself. At under $400, I personally think it's easily justifiable. I'm not a total tech geek, but this is the best purchase I've made for a long time. If this thing works out, I'll buy three or four more. I just love this netbook that much. Get more detail about Acer Aspire One AOA150-1126 8.9-Inch Netbook - White.
